Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-05-25
Azotea is a company building technology to equalize real estate markets in developing countries. This policy covers two surfaces: this website (azotea.dev) and the mobile apps we publish. We keep things short and concrete on purpose.
Azotea is operated by Arturo Rosete and Alan Calvillo, based in Mexico. If you have any questions about this policy or your data, email us at hello@azotea.dev.
The website
azotea.dev is a static site served by GitHub Pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and embeds no third-party trackers. Fonts and styles are served from our own domain. The only data that exists about your visit is what GitHub Pages logs to operate the service (IP address, timestamp, request path) — those logs are governed by GitHub's privacy statement.
The Azotea app
Everything below covers the Azotea mobile app, not the website.
Information we collect
We collect only what we need to make the app work:
- Account information. Your email address, display name, and your password (or an identifier from your sign-in provider, if you use one).
- Household membership. The houses you belong to, the other members of those houses, and your role within each one.
- Expense data. The expenses you record — amount, description, date, category, who paid, and how the cost is split among housemates.
- Expense and payment evidence. When you attach a photo to an expense or a payment — for example, a receipt or a screenshot — we store that image alongside the related record. You choose whether to attach evidence; the app does not access your camera roll or take photos on its own.
- Push-notification identifier. An identifier so Apple can deliver notifications to your phone — we use Apple's Push Notification Service (APNs).
- Basic technical data. Information your phone sends when the app talks to our servers — your IP address, the time, and which feature you used — so we can keep the service running and prevent abuse.
We do not collect contacts, location, or advertising identifiers. We do not run third-party advertising or analytics SDKs in the app.
How we use your information
- To create and authenticate your account.
- To show you and your housemates the shared expenses and balances for your household.
- To send push notifications you have opted into — for example, when a housemate adds an expense or marks a debt as settled.
- To diagnose bugs, prevent abuse, and keep the service running.
We do not sell your data, and we do not use your expense data for advertising or profiling.
Who we share it with
Azotea relies on a small number of service providers to run. We share only what is necessary for each provider to do its job:
- Supabase. We use Supabase as our backend database, authentication, and file storage provider. Your account, household, and expense data — along with any photos you attach as evidence — are stored in a Supabase project that we control. Supabase processes this data on our behalf under their privacy and security terms.
- Apple (APNs). When the app sends you a push notification, the notification payload and your device token are delivered through Apple's Push Notification Service. Apple's handling of that data is governed by Apple's privacy policy.
We may also disclose information if we are legally required to do so — for example, in response to a valid legal request.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and household data for as long as your account is active. The basic technical data described above is kept as part of our operational logs, and we do not currently delete those logs on a fixed schedule.
When you delete your account, we erase your name and email address and prevent you from signing in again. Your household memberships are deactivated at the same time.
Expenses, debts, and any photos you attached to them stay in the households where you created them — the other members still need an accurate record of who paid for what. These items remain linked to an anonymous account that no longer carries your name or email, and we do not delete them on a fixed schedule.
If you want specific records removed beyond the default deletion above — for example, a photo you no longer want stored — email hello@azotea.dev and we will handle it manually.
Deleting your account
You can delete your Azotea account from inside the app, under Settings → Account → Delete account. You can also email hello@azotea.dev and we will delete your account within 30 days.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete the personal information we hold about you, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@azotea.dev from the address associated with your account. We will respond within a reasonable timeframe.
Children
Azotea is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If the changes are material, we will let you know in the app or by email before they take effect. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page always reflects the current version.
